George Chevrie

died March 23, 1901 · Randolph County, Arkansas

George Chevrie was held in the jail at Pocahontas, Arkansas, in March 1901. A masked crowd of about 200 men broke into the jail, took him from custody and hanged him, according to the Age-Herald. The Gazette reported that a coroner's jury had held him for murder and that his trial had been postponed because of feeling against him. One account says the sheriff tried to protect him but was overcome by the crowd, while another does not say whether jail officers resisted or handed him over.
