Gary Lee Schaefer
Gary Lee Schaefer, 72, was a car mechanic in his hometown of Springfield, Vermont, and a Navy veteran, and he and his family were active members of the Christadelphian Church of Springfield. He was held at the Kentucky State Penitentiary in Eddyville under the Interstate Corrections Compact when he died in November 2023. According to Vermont Department of Corrections spokesman Isaac Dayno, staff found him during a routine cell check, he was taken by ambulance to a local hospital, and he died there after an acute medical event. Dayno said the death is not considered suspicious, and Kentucky corrections officials said the same.
