Died in jail or a lockup
Garland Semler
Garland Semler was 19 years old and the youngest of four men held in the Siskiyou County jail at Yreka. On August 26, 1895, a mob took him and the other three from the jail and hanged them in the courthouse square. One account says the under-sheriff refused to give up the keys until a deputy opened the doors, while another says the sheriff arrived after the hanging had ended. As he was led out, Semler asked that his mother be told he was innocent of the crime.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched
Reported by: Chronicling America newspaper accounts of the Yreka mob (reporters).
