Freddie Owens was put to death by lethal injection in South Carolina on September 20, 2024, the state's first execution in 13 years. The South Carolina Department of Corrections said the drugs began at about 6:35 p.m. and that he was pronounced dead at 6:55 p.m. Media witnesses said he was conscious for about a minute, that his breathing slowed over several minutes, and that he showed no visible discomfort. Before the execution he exchanged glances and silent words with his lawyer through the glass, and she smiled at him. A spiritual advisor was with him.
