Fred Goings
Frederick Goings, a Black man, was held in the Frederick jail in Frederick, Maryland, when a crowd of 60 or more broke in during the early hours of November 17, 1895. According to The Morning News, citing a Frederick dispatch, the sheriff fired his revolver into the crowd and the jailer refused the mob's demand for keys, but the mob forced his cell door and took him out of town. The paper reports that he was hanged from a tree and then shot once through the heart, and it describes a Salvation Army worker who stayed beside him, asked permission to pray for him, and knelt at his side. A second paper, the Daily Public Ledger, dates the death to November 18 and reports only that a mob took him from the jail and hanged him, without saying whether staff resisted or how the mob got access to him.
