Ermile Antoine

St. Landry Parish, Louisiana

Ermile Antoine, a Black man, was being brought to the jail in Opelousas, Louisiana, by two deputy sheriffs when, according to The Iuka Vidette in August 1909, a mob took him from the officers near Grand Prairie. The paper reported that the mob shot him to death and riddled his body with bullets. A Tupelo Journal report the next day said another man being brought to the jail with him, Onzeime Thomas, was also taken and shot to death. The deputies are said to have been taken from or to have had their prisoners taken from them, and whether they resisted the mob is not addressed in these accounts.
