Dustin Kemp Medlin
Dustin Kemp Medlin, 29, died on July 29, 2018, at CMC-Union after being held at the Union County Jail in Monroe, North Carolina. He was placed in a single observation cell while still in the booking process, and staff reported that he appeared sick and lethargic. EMS was called around 6 a.m., and he was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A federal lawsuit says jail staff were negligent in caring for him as his condition worsened over several hours, that medical staff were not called until shortly before EMS was summoned, and that much of the jail video from that period was deleted or cannot be viewed. The medical examiner has not yet determined the cause of death, the State Bureau of Investigation is investigating, and the sheriff's office had not responded to the lawsuit when it was reported.
