Dr. Crawford

died October 19, 1876 · Eastern Regional Jail, Berkeley County, West Virginia

Dr. Crawford was held in the Berkeley County Jail at Berkeley Springs, West Virginia. The Washington Star, citing the Cumberland News, reported that about two dozen to forty masked men entered the jail in the early hours of a Thursday morning while the jailer was absent. A guard of young men reportedly told them there were no keys, so the group broke open Dr. Crawford's door with a sledge, pulled him from his bed without letting him dress, and took him away. The paper reported that he was hanged by the mob and was not seen again. The account describes no resistance by the jail's staff.
