Derrick Rose
Derrick Rose was 25, and his mother, Kathy Richards, and brother, Chris Rose, say he was trying to get his car fixed so he could leave town. He was held at the Grant County Detention Center in Kentucky, where in September 2010 he was found hanging from a bed sheet tied to a ceiling vent in an isolation cell, and he died two days later at a local hospital. The Kentucky State Police investigation found no foul play, and the jail's internal review found no rule violations but acknowledged that a cell check was late. His family says he was seeking attention and did not want to die, while a 2013 U.S. Justice Department letter blamed serious breakdowns in jail medical care for his death. His mother says his donated organs saved at least two lives.
