Died in jail or a lockup

Daniel Arata, an Italian man who kept a saloon in Denver, was held in the city jail in Denver, Colorado, in late July 1893. A mob of about fifteen thousand people broke down the jail doors, took him out, and killed him by hanging him from a tree, with his body also shot. Accounts say the crowd overcame the authorities, and neither account says whether jail officers resisted or handed him over.
