Coudot
Alexander Coudot, an American Indian man, was held at the Emmons County jail near Williamsport, North Dakota, in November 1897. The Atlanta Constitution reports that about forty masked men arrived on horseback, overpowered the deputy keeping watch, and took him from the jail, then hanged him from a windlass in the jail yard while the sheriff was away from the county. The Twice-A-Week Courier-Journal reports that the men rode in late at night and that his body was left hanging through the following day because no coroner had arrived. Accounts differ on whether he died on November 13 or November 14, 1897.
