Christopher M. Mejia
Christopher M. Mejia, 43, of Emporia, died on October 30, 2018, while held at the Lyon County Detention Center. Lyon County Sheriff Jeff Cope said foul play was not suspected, and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation investigated the death. Before returning to the jail, Mejia had been treated at Newman Hospital for possible alcohol withdrawal, and after he got back he said he might have a seizure, then collapsed and apparently hit his head. A later KBI report said the autopsy could not determine the manner of death and listed the cause as bleeding beneath the skin associated with cirrhosis of the liver.
Cause of death, as reported: Died of illness. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation report lists the cause as bleeding beneath the skin associated with cirrhosis of the liver, with intoxication contributing, and says the manner could not be determined.
