Died in jail or a lockup
Chas. Williams
Chas. Williams was held at the Chattanooga jail in September 1885 when a large crowd gathered outside. Newspaper accounts say the militia guarding the jail was withdrawn after it received no orders from the Governor, and that the sheriff would not hand over the keys. Early on September 7, a mob broke open the jail doors, took him from his cell to an upper hall and hanged him, and one paper reported that he strangled to death within minutes.
Cause of death, as reported: Killed by another person in custody
