Charley Jones

died May 6, 1914 · Grovetown City Jail, Columbia County, Georgia

Charley Jones, a Black man, was held in the town lockup at Grovetown, Georgia, in May 1914, after several white men, including a constable, seized and beat him, and a doctor dressed the wounds on his head. Fearing he would be lynched from the wooden lockup, town citizens began moving him toward Appling for safekeeping, with two deputies escorting him. Newspaper reports say that on the night of May 6, 1914, a mob took him from the deputies near Grovetown, about fifteen miles from Augusta, and killed him, though the accounts differ on whether he was shot or hanged and then shot. His body was found the next morning on the public roads.

Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A mob took Charley Jones from deputies escorting him toward Appling and shot him to death near Grovetown, Georgia, according to an Augusta dispatch.
