Brady Folkens
Brady Folkens was 17, and his mother, Dawn Folkens, describes him as a typical teenager with dreams who was full of life. He was held at STAR Academy Boot Camp, a juvenile facility in South Dakota far from his home, and died in December 2016 after becoming seriously ill and being taken to a hospital. South Dakota officials said his death was caused by an infection from parvovirus B19. His mother and medical experts dispute that finding and believe a reaction to the antibiotic minocycline, prescribed at the facility, caused his heart to fail.
Cause of death, as reported: Died of illness (disputed). South Dakota officials attribute his death to a parvovirus B19 infection, while his mother, Dawn Folkens, and consulted medical experts dispute this and say a hypersensitivity to minocycline caused cardiac collapse.
Reported by: South Dakota officials (the agency that held him); Dawn Folkens (mother) (family or their lawyers); consulted medical experts.
