Brack Kenley
Brack Kenley, a Black man whom one report put at about 35, was held in the McCracken County jail in Paducah, Kentucky, in October 1916. A mob of several hundred people broke into the jail, took him from custody, and hanged him, and his body was later burned, according to the Mt. Sterling Advocate and the Public Ledger. The Hartford Herald reported that the mob held the jailer and deputies at bay and chiseled through the bars of his cell, while the Public Ledger said the jailer and a circuit judge who tried to stop the crowd were overpowered. The Mt. Sterling Advocate reported that officers, including the circuit judge, asked the mob to let the law take its course, but the crowd ignored them.
