Blount

died October 24, 1904 · Berkley Station House, Norfolk County, Virginia

George F. Blount, a Black man, was held in the Berkley station house in Virginia on October 24, 1904. The Richmond Planet, citing witness W. W. Robertson and the turnkey's report, says masked men forced the turnkey at pistol point to hand over the keys, took Blount from his cell and beat him on the street car track. The paper says one of the men then shot him in the head, and that a policeman had been told of the mob's plan beforehand. Other papers gave the victim's name as George W. Blount and described him as a respected local man who ran a fish and oyster shop; those accounts say the mob took him from the police station and shot him. The funeral was largely attended by Black residents of the town, and no disorder occurred.

Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. Masked men took Blount from the Berkley station house, after the turnkey was forced at pistol point to hand over the keys, and shot him, according to the Richmond Planet citing witness W. W. Robertson and the turnkey's report; the Planet also says a policeman had been told of the mob's plan beforehand and is alleged to have encouraged others to join it.

Reported by: Richmond Planet (reporters); W. W. Robertson (witnesses); the turnkey's report (the agency that held him).
