Died in jail or a lockup
Betsy McCray
Betsy McCray was held in the Carrollton jail in Carroll County, Mississippi, when a mob came for the prisoners on August 1, 1901. One account says the mob demanded the keys from the jailer, who went to the cells and handed the prisoners over to the crowd, which hanged her. Another account says the mob broke into the jail, took the prisoners out and hanged them. The Caucasian reported that a judge and the district attorney had urged against lynching earlier that day, and a Picayune dispatch said the governor arrived by special train too late to stop it.
