Archie Joiner
Archie Joiner, a Black man, was held in the jail at Amite City, Louisiana, in January 1897. According to a press dispatch from New Orleans, a mob of about 200 men broke into the jail, and deputies guarding it resisted but were overpowered. The men took Joiner from custody, along with two other men, and carried him to Tickfaw, Louisiana, where he was shot to death on January 20, 1897. The dispatch reports that he protested his innocence before he was killed. A second newspaper account gives the same date and place and says the deputies had been overpowered before he was taken.
