Anthony Stewart
Anthony Stewart was 23 and lived with schizophrenia. His mother, Valerie Stewart, says she repeatedly called the Gila County Jail in Globe, Arizona, to get him the medication he needed, and his family says staff failed to provide adequate mental health care and supervision. He died in his cell in April 2021 after hanging himself, according to an autopsy and the sheriff's office. A sheriff's office internal investigation found that a detention officer did not complete the required 15-minute checks before he was found, and the officer later resigned. His mother has filed a wrongful death lawsuit, and the sheriff's office declined to comment because of the pending litigation.
