Angel Nieves Diaz

55 years old · died December 13, 2006 · Florida State Prison, Bradford County, Florida

Ángel Díaz was 55 years old, and his cousin said he was healthy and had recently offered to donate a kidney to her ill son. The State of Florida executed him by lethal injection at Florida State Prison in Raiford on December 13, 2006. The execution took 34 minutes and needed a second dose of chemicals, and witnesses saw him appear to move and grimace during it. The Department of Corrections attributed the second dose to liver disease and said he felt no pain, but his family said they had never heard that he had liver disease, and a medical expert and death penalty opponents disputed that account and called the execution botched. The governor of Puerto Rico had sought clemency for him, and Florida's governor ordered a review that included an autopsy.
