Alex Caudatte
Alex Caudatte, a Native American man, was held in the jail at Williamsport, North Dakota, in 1897. About 40 men on horseback rode into town and forced deputies to take him and two other men from their cells. The mob hanged the three men; two accounts place this at a meat rack outside the courthouse, while a 2018 Voice of America report says he was hanged from a nearby beef windlass. The sources say the deputies were forced to hand the men over.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A mob took Alex Caudatte from the Williamsport jail and hanged him from a meat rack outside the courthouse, and deputies were forced to remove him from his cell.
