Albert Martin

died May 27, 1889 · county jail, St. Clair County, Michigan

Albert Martin was held in the jail at Port Huron, Michigan, when a mob broke in during the early morning of May 27, 1889. According to the Savannah Tribune, about fifty masked men got past the turnkey, who said he did not have the keys, and dragged Martin from his bed through the sheriff's office into the street. The Richmond Dispatch reports that the turnkey was seized and cell doors were battered in, and that the sheriff and police had not acted on earlier talk of lynching. The mob hanged Martin from a bridge, and the Alexandria Gazette, citing an Associated Press dispatch, says no officer was in sight to stop them.
